Educating Our Youth
The next step for Junior sailors that have graduated from sailing Optimist Dinghy’s is often a move into an Olympic class boat such as the singlehanded Laser or Laser Radial, or a double handed boat such as the 420, I420 or 29r. South Florida sailors are consistently winning national and international events in these classes.
The LYC Sailing Foundation also provides grants to South Florida Junior Sailors that qualify for major National and International events in these more advanced sailing classes.
In addition, high school sailing teams that have qualified for national high school championship events receive support from the Sailing Foundation to help defray the expenses associated with traveling to these events as a supplement to their own fund raising efforts.
In recent years the Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation has provided numerous competition grants to South Florida sailors that have competed in the ISAF Youth World Championship, 4.7 Laser World Championship, Laser Radial World Championship, and the Snipe Junior World Championship. In addition High School sailing teams were supported at the Baker Cup Team Racing National Championship and the Mallory Cup National Fleet Racing Championship.
