Past Commodore Lang Ryder served as the 71st Commodore of Lauderdale Yacht Club. He passed away in March 2023. He was a beloved and active member of LYC, and a passionate supporter of the LYC Sailing Foundation (LYCSF).
To honor PC Ryder’s generosity, passion for youth sailing, especially competitive junior sailboat racing, LYCSF in partnership with the Ryder Family, created an award that incorporates one of PC Ryder’s favorite phrases for an outstanding, up-and-coming junior sailor. The term “Hot Shot” comes from Erika Reineke‘s nickname that he enthusiastically called her through many years of watching her progress to be a world class sailor.
This award is decided and given by LYCSF with input from the LYC Sailing Program Director and the Lang Ryder family. The winner is announced at the annual LYC Change of Command Ceremony in April.
LYC Sailing Foundation (LYCSF), together with the Ryder Family, are proud to announce this year’s PC Lang Ryder Hot Shot Award recipient is Jake Homberger! He received a $2500 sailing scholarship and a signature Lang Ryder shirt.
Jake is currently an ILCA sailor at LYC. He began his career here at LYC sailing Optimus prams and has shown a tenacity for racing.
Jake is a graduate of William T. Dwyer High School and will be attending Boston College this Fall to sail. He will be rooming with Cody Roe, the recipient of the first Hot Shot Award last year.
Jake’s sailing accolades include winning the ILCA 6 Midwinters East in 2025, the Orange Bowl in ILCA 6 this past December 2024 and came in 2nd the previous two years. In 2024, he ‘Podiumed’ 3rd Place Finish at the ILCA6 Youth World Championship in Mar del Plata, Argentina, won 1st at 2024 ILCA North American Championship, and 1st at 2024 ILCA US National Championship.
